Entrance to SEANOL

SEANOL’s unique and extensive scope of bioactivity is based on the combination of 14 marine polyphenols.  This optimally balanced wide spectrum of polyphenols enables SEANOL to positively impact more biomolecules and cellular functions than land based polyphenols.  The broader range, from water soluble to alcohol soluble, of bioactive phlorotannins where SEANOL’s polyphenols are active, as compared to the very narrow range for green tea polyphenols.  As a result, SEANOL delivers health benefits throughout the body, including the brain where only oil soluble molecules cross the blood/brain barrier.  SEANOL's balance of water and alcoho soluble polyphenols creates multiple opportunities in developing formulations for various applications and markets.More details on chemistries and physiological properties of SEANOL are described in the website:

Abstract:

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are diseases closely associated with obesity and diabetes. Type 2 diabetes prevalence and high body mass index in cryptogenic cirrhosis may imply that obesity leads to cirrhosis. Here we examined the effect of the extract of Ecklonia cava, a brown algae, on the activation of high glucose-induced hepatic stellate cell (HSC), a key player in hepatic fibrosis.

Isolated HSCs were incubated with or without high glucose. Ecklonia cava extract (ECE) was added to the culture with high glucose simultaneously.

The treatment with high glucose stimulated expression of type I collagen and α-smooth muscle actin, markers of activation, in HSC in dose-dependent manner. The activation of high glucose-treated HSC was suppressed with ECE. The increase in the formation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the decrease in intracellular glutathione were observed at early time after treatment of high glucose and these changes were suppressed by the simultaneous addition of ECE. High glucose stimulated the secretion of bioactive transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) from the cells and the stimulation was also suppressed by the treatment of HSCs with ECE.

These results suggest that the suppression of high glucose-induced HSC activation with ECE is mediated by the inhibition of ROS and/or GSH and down-regulation of TGF-β secretion. ECE is useful to prevent the development of diabetic liver cirrhosis.
